Moniteau, Karns City score runaway wins on diamond
They weren’t on the field long, but they made their point.
Moniteau and Karns City combined to play seven innings of baseball on Monday at Pullman Park, outscoring their respective opponents by a combined 37-0.
The Warriors (4-4) defeated North Clarion, 15-0, in four innings before the Gremlins (6-1) dispatched Forest Area, 22-0, in three frames.
Dawson Cook was the winning pitcher for Moniteau, striking out eight in three innings of work. He was also the beneficiary of a 14-hit attack as everybody in the Warrior lineup reached base, seven scoring at least one run, six collecting at least one RBI.
“Our bats are coming around,” Moniteau first baseman and leadoff batter Connor Ealy said. “We’re getting production up and down the lineup and that’s what we’re capable of doing.”
Ealy had a pair of singles and scored two runs. Ian Ross had a single, sacrifice fly and three RBI from the No. 4 spot in the batting order.
“It’s important that we support our pitchers, especially when they’re throwing well,” Ross said. “Get the lead and keep building on it.”
Moniteau took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the third, breaking the game open at that point by scoring six times. Ross had a two-run single in the frame and the Warriors took advantage of a pair of North Clarion errors.
The hosts scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to end the game via the 15-run rule. Cook delivered the game-ending blow, a two-run double to deep center with one out in the inning.
“We’ve been playing baseball together since we were five or six years old,” Ealy said. “We’re playing good baseball now and we’ve got two really good starting pitchers in Dawdon Wallace and Dawson Cook.
“But we know we can play better than what we’ve done so far.”
Karns City (6-1) took advantage of a bizarre second inning to end its evening early. The Gremlins sent 23 batters to the plate in that frame, scoring 18 runs on only five hits. Forest Area pitchers walked eight and hit four batters in the frame. Three other batters reached on errors.
Troy Nagel had a three-run triple to deep center to highlight the inning. Nagel had two hits, six RBI and three runs scored in the contest.
“It was a little strange out there, but we still have to play baseball the way we play baseball,” Nagel said. “We have to keep working on what we do best.”
The Gremlins had 18 batters reach base in two innings without getting a hit.
“We stayed disciplined at the plate and I was glad to see that,” KC coach Josh “Sluggo” Smith said “You don’t want a game like this to get you into any bad habits. We still swung at good pitches and hit the ball hard.”
All nine hitters in the Gremlins’ lineup scored at least two runs. No. 9 hitter Koen Williams was hit by a pitch twice and drew a walk during that lengthy second inning. Jacob Callihan had two singles and four RBI, Jacob Jones a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.
Tyler Kelly, Colton Christie, Joey O’Donnell and Williams combined to score nine runs despite producing no hits. Winning pitcher Mason Sherwin struck out three in two innings.
“I tip my hat to Forest Area,” Smith said. “They’re showing up. doing their best, supporting each other, not getting down on each other during something like this ... They are showing a lot of character. They’re enjoying playing baseball with their teammates and I respect that.”
