No bail reduction until mental health review
A Harrisville man continues to be held in the Butler County Prison after his attempt to have his bail reduced was denied in county court, pending the receipt of a mental health evaluation.
Andrew Woods, 21, remains held on $10,000 cash bail, on charges of felony robbery and summary retail theft after Judge William Shaffer denied the bail reduction without prejudice, stating that the matter can be revisited once a mental health evaluation is received.
Woods' attorney, Public Defender Joseph Smith, said Woods was in mental health treatment before his incarceration and has submitted an updated mental health review for consideration in Behavior Health Court, but that review has yet to come back.
Behavioral Health Court addresses individuals diagnosed with a mental health disorder who are involved in the criminal justice system, providing for appropriate mental health treatment coupled with additional supervised support, according to the county program's website.
Woods was charged after an incident at the Friedman's store on West Brady Street on June 20.
Butler police said Woods attempted to steal a package of sausage and rolls from the store and tussled with two employees and a customer who thwarted the getaway.
One employee suffered pain and bruising to his right hand and arm, the other ended up with an injured left middle finger and the customer complained of pain to his left arm.
Because of Woods alleged actions, the summary shoplifting charge became a felony robbery charge, police said.
Woods was initially held on $30,000 bail, which was reduced to $10,000 at the preliminary hearing.
