5 Rock athletes at NCAA meet

Five Slippery Rock University athletes, including Mars graduate Brad Mueller and Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran, will represent The Rockat the NCAADivision IIIndoor Track and Field Championships next weekend at Minnesota State University's Mankato campus.

Mueller is seeded sixth in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.79 seconds. Cochran is seeded 16th in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 57.59 seconds.

Women's pole vaulter Jennifer Hansen and high jumper Whitney Hendershot are seeded second in their respective events. Hansen set a PSACrecord this winter with a vault of 13 feet, 1Z\x inches. Hendershot's best jump was 5-9Z\v.

Pat Reagan is seeded 13th in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.50.

The Rock opened its 2008 season with a 6-0, 11-3 doubleheader sweep of host Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.Shardea Croes paced the Game 1 attack with a triple, two RBI and two stolen bases, Jessica Kortz doubled and singled, Nikki Collins added a triple and Lauren Saulter had a double.Stacey Rhoades blanked Benedict on two hits through five innings before Lisa Getgen allowed one hit over the final two frames.Alicia Dixon had two hits and three RBIin Game 2. Kim Weindel added two hits, with Rhoades getting a triple. Shauna Walker was the winning pitcher, allowing one run in three innings of relief.The Rock begins a string of 10 games in Cocoa Beach, Fla., with a doubleheader against Cedarville (Ohio) Saturday.

Rich Hocanson struck out seven over six innings as SRU defeated Concordia (N.Y.) 5-3 in Fort Pierce, Fla., Friday.Don Pugliese pitched the final three innings for the save.The Rock (3-0) banged out 14 hits. Jim Eimiller doubled and singled, Billy Messer had two singles and two RBI, M.J. Parsons two singles and two runs scored.
