Failure to register means jail

Megan's Law offender sentenced

A Zelienople man who previously pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender was sentenced to county prison in Butler County Court on Thursday.

James M. Leiby, 40, was sentenced to 12 months minus one day to 24 months minus two days in the Butler County Prison by county Judge Timothy McCune.

He previously pleaded guilty to felony failure to register with the Pennsylvania State Police before county Judge William Shaffer on May 22.

Leiby, who is a 15-year Megan's Law registrant from a 2003 conviction of felony statutory sexual assault following a Sept. 1, 2002, incident, failed to register his address change with the state police on Oct. 11, 2016, according to information delivered to the court by the prosecution during his plea hearing. He was charged by Jackson Township police.

Leiby has been held in the Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail since Dec. 23.
