Julia K. Sherman
Julia K. Sherman, 92, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away peacefully at her home Sunday.
She was born on July 11, 1921, in Butler and was the daughter of the late Sofia and Alex Kastelan.
She was a graduate of the Butler High School Class of 1939.
While living in Butler, she was an active member of St. Marks' Lutheran Church.
In 1966 the Sherman family moved to Hagerstown, Md., and she became an active member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown where she taught Sunday school and performed other volunteer duties. She was a member of the Clear Spring Historical Association.
She was employed at the Glenn L. Martin aircraft manufacturing company in Baltimore as a secretary before supporting her husband's machine shop business for almost 30 years. She retired from the central office of the Washington County Board of Education after many years of service.
Julia will be forever remembered for her strong- willed determination to remain independent, hard work, and as a giving soul who reached out to many people in her long life. She was an avid gardener, maintaining three fish ponds, and at one point kept three horses for her riding pleasure.
She is survived by two sons, Karl Sherman of Morristown, N.J., and Kurt Sherman of Frederick, Md.; two daughters, Kathy Thrall of Hagerstown, Md., and Clara Wagner of Morristown, N.J.; four grandchildren, Stephen Sherman, Gretchen Kendall, William Thrall Jr., and Reed Wagner, one great-granddaughter, Hayley Kendall, and a brother, Stanley Kastelan of Butler.
Her husband, Samuel D. Sherman, preceded her in death in 1986. She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 601 Washington Ave., Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. G. Stanley Steele officiating.
