According to multiple Pittsburgh news outlets, Rochester, N.Y.-based grocery chain Wegmans Food Market is in negotiations to open a location in Cranberry Township.

Reports indicate Wegmans is looking at a location at Cranberry Springs, the 100-acre mixed-use site that’s home to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

Cranberry Township manager Dan Santoro said he has been fielding calls about the deal since Wednesday when reports began to surface, but, at this time, the township has not been contacted by the grocery chain about plans to open a location in the area.

“We certainly would welcome a Wegmans in Cranberry Township,” Santoro said. “But I don't know anything about what the proposal is. I only know what I read in the (Pittsburgh) paper.”

Santoro said if the deal were to happen, he thinks that it would be able to compete with the already established grocery giants in the township such as Aldi, Fresh Thyme Market, Walmart and Giant Eagle.

“Obviously there is a big grocery presence here with multiple grocery chains,” Santoro said. “I feel competition is always good for consumers.”

Wegmans Food Market currently has 19 locations in Pennsylvania with some in the Erie and State College areas, but it has not expanded into the Pittsburgh region.

The company has more than 50,000 employees who serve millions of customers at more than 100 stores across seven states, according to its website.

Wegmans spokesperson Marcie Rivera declined to comment.
