Eunice Smathers Gilbert
Eunice Smathers Gilbert, 97, of Butler died Friday.
She was born May 16, 1919, in Clarion County to the late Donald Amsler and the late Bertha Garis Amsler.
Eunice enjoyed oil paintings and ceramics, and she taught various art classes at the YMCA. She was a homemaker. Eunice expressed her faith through Child Evangelism Ministries and a lifelong sharing of God's Word.
Eunice is survived by two sons, Rod (Carole) Smathers of Murrysville, Pa., and Jerry (Maxine) Smathers of Butler; two stepdaughters, Susan Gilbert of Washington and JoAnn (Vic) Banco of Washington; five grandchildren, Beth (Mark) Pisani, Bonni Smathers, Dana (David) Mormak, Jason (Lauren) Smathers and Lisa (Jake) Dolder; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Horace B. Smathers, who she married Feb. 16, 1940, and who died Feb. 20, 1974, and Clyde E. Gilbert, who she married Oct. 14, 1977, and died Feb. 21, 2014; two brothers, Kenneth Amsler and Wayne Amsler; and one sister, Hilda McElhattan.
GILBERT — Friends of Eunice Smathers Gilbert, who died Friday, May 12, 2017, will be received from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, with the funeral to follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Roger Nuerge officiating.
