Sarver man gets probation sentence for assaulting minor

A Sarver man was sentenced Tuesday to serve 36 months of probation after pleading guilty to assaulting a 14-year-old girl in 2022.

In addition to his probation sentence, George R. Shirey, 42, was found to be a Tier 2 offender under Megan’s Law and ordered to report to state police for 25 years after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of indecent assault of a person under 16. He was not prosecuted on a felony count of corruption of minors as a part of his plea agreement.

The victim, who is now 16, said Shirey hurt her at a time when she was getting the help she needed and was doing well.

She also said that with Father’s Day approaching, she wished she had a father.

“I couldn’t be the father they needed,” Shirey said before apologizing for hurting the girl and her family.

“I chose to do something wrong. I just did. I’m sorry,” Shirey said.

State police in Kittanning received a report of the assault in March 2023. Police said Shirey told officers he touched the girl’s private parts during a drive from Erie to Butler County because he had the “impression she would have enjoyed it.”

The incident occurred on Route 422 in Prospect in November 2022, according to court documents.

The victim told police Shirey had touched her inappropriately twice during the car ride and that she was uncomfortable and didn’t say anything.

Police said the girl reported Shirey had also grabbed her buttocks and called her attractive several times.

Police said Shirey confessed to the allegations and told police he didn’t want to do it again, saying, “It wasn’t fun.”
