A Franklin Township woman was accused of animal cruelty after 160 dead rabbits were found in her garage and 137 more were found living in deplorable conditions, according to state police.

Wendy L. Czapski, 68, was charged Tuesday, June 18, with one felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, nine misdemeanor charges of animal neglect and 142 summary charges of animal neglect after police responded to her home in November 2023.

Police said troopers were asked to assist the state’s department of agriculture with the case, and found the home in “squalor.”

Police said 137 rabbits were living in unclean cages and lacked food and water, while 160 dead rabbits — some of which were reduced to skeletons — were found among them.

The interior of the home was filled with feces, urine stains and trash, according to police. Police said trash also surrounded the outside of the home.

Police said three golden retrievers, a mixed breed dog and two cats were also found inside the home and appeared healthy, but were living in “unfit” conditions.

Czapski surrendered the living animals and said she could no longer care for them, according to the affidavit.

Czapski’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
