James H. “Sarge” Shearer, 75, of Butler, passed away, Wednesday morning, July 3, 2024, in the comfort of his home.

Born Sept. 4, 1948, in Kittanning, he was a son of Olive Shearer and the late Herbert M. Shearer.

Sarge graduated from Butler High School, Class of 1966. He retired as sergeant of the Butler Township Police Department in August 2014, following 42 years of service beginning in 1972. Following his retirement, he worked part time for Cochran Subaru. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in the Vietnam War, with 24 years of total service time. He was a member of the NRA, the Police Marksman Association, the F.O.P. Lodge 107 in Butler and the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora. Sarge was a PIAA official, also belonging to the Butler County Sports Officials and the Baseball Umpires Association. He enjoyed golfing and was an avid history reader.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Jo “Becky” (Steighner) Shearer, whom he married April 24, 1971; his three sons, James K. Shearer, Christopher J. (Melissa) Shearer and Donald L. Shearer; grandsons, Kyle Shearer, Cole Shearer and Chase Shearer; his mother, Olive “Judy” Shearer; three sisters, Bonnie Jean Vensel, Sue Ellen (Robert) Pelles and Lori Ann Schaffner; cousins, Dick Shearer and Tom Shearer many other cousins; as well as a number of nieces and nephews, four sisters-in-law and spouses, and three brothers-in-law and spouse.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mackenzie Renee Shearer.

SHEARER — Friends of James H. “Sarge” Shearer, who died Wednesday, July 3, 2024, will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora.

Sarge will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
