‘No timetable’ for reopening of Herman Post Office, says USPS

SUMMIT TWP — The aftereffects of the “hundred-year floods” in April are still being felt, as the post office on Geibel Road in Herman has been closed since April 18 due to the resulting damage and, according to multiple representatives from the U.S. Postal Service, has no timetable for reopening.

“Due to damage incurred by flooding, the Herman Post Office is temporarily closed,” said Mark Lawrence, communications specialist with the U.S. Postal Service. “There is no time frame on completion of repairs and we appreciate our valued customers for their patience and understanding.”

“Due to facility conditions and needed repairs, it will be necessary to suspend all services at the Herman Post Office at the close of business today, Thursday, April 18, 2024,” reads a note posted to the front door of the building. “We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause you.”

A representative from the Butler Post Office said the floodwaters ran from a neighbor’s property and into the Herman post office property.

Since the closure, those with P.O. boxes at Herman have had to trek five miles to the Butler Post Office on South Main Street to retrieve their mail, a 10 minute drive.

“We realize with change there is always concern,” the note read. “We are confident that the Butler Post Office will meet all customers’ needs with effective and regular postal services.”

Summit Township residents aren’t the only ones who have been dealing with this issue. The Renfrew Post Office on East Main Street also closed in April as a result of the same storm, which completely submerged that building’s parking lot with floodwaters from Connoquenessing Creek.

The Renfrew Post Office has still yet to reopen. Like with Herman, post office box holders at Renfrew have had to drive to Butler to retrieve their mail since April.
