The world has heard of Butler now
Like Donald Trump, I was born and raised in a place every American has heard of: Queens County, N.Y., where over two million people live in probably the most cosmopolitan community in the world.
My mother was born and raised in a place very few Americans have heard of. It’s a place she remembered as having steep streets and large families of eastern European descent where fathers worked in jobs that were dirty and dangerous and everyone — no matter how poor — dressed up really nice when they went to church on Sunday.
Lyndora.
Growing up, when friends — noticing my mother's distinctive, nonnative New York accent — asked where she was from I would reply, “Lyndora.”
But since no one had ever heard of it, I started to pivot to the larger “Butler.” Still, no one in New York had ever heard of Butler, either.
They have now.
