Cranberry Township updates park upgrade plan

CRANBERRY TWP — Supervisors reviewed the updated version of the township’s master plan to upgrade the community park facilities during an agenda preparation meeting on Thursday evening, July 25.

While an authorization to bid was approved on Thursday, decisive action on phase one of the project will be taken during the regular board meeting scheduled for Aug. 1.

The main part of the long-term project is to install two new pickleball courts to the area that will be open to the public.

After the board worked on finishing a similar project at UPMC Passavant Sportsplex at Graham Park last year, it quickly turned its attention to the Cranberry Township Community Park.

“We’ve been working in different locations, but it was time to put some focus here (at Cranberry Township Community Park),” said township manager Dan Santoro. “This master plan looks at that long-term plan. We’re putting in two free pickleball courts. You won’t have to be a member of an association to play. There’s a demand for that, and we’re excited for it to happen.”

The estimated cost for phase one of the project, which also includes significant improvements to the existing tennis and volleyball facilities, is about $300,000.

Architects and engineers have already been selected for the project. The board will authorize the bid officially next week. The actual cost of the project will not be known until the bid price is finalized next week.

“Our board is always looking at our existing facilities and how we can improve them for public access,” Santoro added.

Another authorization to bid was conducted on the municipal building’s interior signage and exterior electronic sign.

That portion of the long-term renovation project will coincide with the completion of the exterior work that has been ongoing at the local municipal center. The board hopes that the renovation will be completed sometime in early September.
