Smith Road in Winfield Township closed due to overnight accident
As of Monday morning, July 29, Smith Road in Winfield Township is closed due to structural damage from a crash that occurred overnight on the bridge over Rough Run.
The road is closed pending an inspection from the township engineer, as well as Butler County Bridge and Fleet Director Kevin Gray.
“The bridge is already kind of shaky as it is, and we’re trying to figure out how to replace it.” said township supervisor Matthew Klabnik. “So we were concerned. We closed the road until we could get our engineer to come out and look at it to make sure it’s still structurally sound, and then figure out an approach to stabilize it.”
According to Klabnik, the bridge’s guard rail sustained most of the damage.
It is not yet known what type of automobile was involved or whether anyone suffered any injuries.
Klabnik said that the Pennsylvania State Police have come out to investigate the crash scene and that they currently have a suspect.
“We understand the vehicle was towed from the scene,” Klabnik said.
