BUTLER TWP — A sewer overflow in June near Greenhill Drive in Butler is a new issue the Butler Area Sewer Authority addressed at a meeting Tuesday morning, Aug. 13.

Duane McKee, executive director of the Butler Area Sewer Authority, said crews cleared a root from the clogged sewer line on June 10; but the authority may need to address the line because it has overflowed before. The area is not included in the Corrective Action Plan for the western service area, a project which BASA has been working on since 2019.

“That’s a whole new issue, whether it’s overall capacity,” McKee said, “it’s a line that needs more attention.”

The authority also voted to withdraw money from the Municipal Benefits Services, a trust organization that provides comprehensive employee benefits programs and services to Pennsylvania municipalities, authorities and councils. According to McKee, BASA is a member of Municipal Benefits Services, so the authority gets money back from its payments to the service.

The authority voted to withdraw the full amount available this year, $5,216, which can be used on wellness products and premiums, McKee said.

“They set aside a percentage of our payments into a fund,” McKee said. “There are opportunities to buy things for wellness, like Fitbits and things like that.”

The sewer authority board also voted to donate $100 to the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, the usual amount the authority donates to the department each year, according to McKee.
