4 teams still have chance for title

Scoop is running out of time.

So is the high school football season.

What once was 12 has now been reduced to four — a quartet of teams still alive in the playoffs.

All three districts are represented. Karns City has a chance to win a District 9 title — something few thought was possible months ago when half the team was on the training table and in street clothes on the sideline.

Seneca Valley is one win away from Heinz Field. Grove City is a pair of victories away from winning back-to-back District 10 titles in two different classifications.

And Slippery Rock could win its first playoff game since 2008.

Of course, it can just as easily all be over for these four teams, and me.

As long as one team is standing, I will make a pick and continue my drive to 100 wins.

I’m at 87 now. It’s unlikely I will make it to the century mark.

But, hey, who knows.

On to the picks:

North Allegheny 38, Seneca Valley 23 — The first time these two teams clashed in September, it was all NA, as in the Seneca Valley offense was Not Available in a 45-3 loss.

You know that didn’t sit well with the prideful Raiders, who have a pretty potent attack with 2012 Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy winner Forrest Barnes, Butler County all-purpose yardage leader Jordan Brown and Wes Welker-esque Jon Dorogy.

But the Tigers are just as loaded.

This will be much closer than the last meeting, but NA will still have SV’s number.

Karns City 27, Kane 18 — The Gremlins have been through much this season: A slew of injuries, a mid-season lull, and now a resurgence that has led to three consecutive impressive wins.

Kane is next on the docket in the District 9 Class AA title game.

Karns City, though, has a swagger now that it has gotten most of its injured players back and healthy again. The Gremlins have more speed than they have had in recent memory, are solid up front and can throw the ball a little bit.

That’s a winning formula.

Hickory 25, Grove City 24 — This is another rematch of a lopsided regular season game.

Hickory rolled the Eagles in September, 41-12. It was Grove City’s first regular season loss since 2009 and snapped a 26-game regular season winning streak. Since the moment the final whistle was blown, Grove City players wanted another crack at the Hornets.

Here it is. Whack that Hornets’ nest.

This may very well be the best game of the week.

Slippery Rock 30, General McLane 22 — The Rockets have had two weeks to prepare for this game.

Slippery Rock is 16-5 in the last two years, but have not won a playoff game.

This could be the first.

Scoop was 3-2 last week and is 87-26 this season.
