George Louis Bernlohr, 83, of Butler passed away Wednesday at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Butler to the late George Leonard Bernlohr and Viola Minnie (Roenigk) Bernlohr.

Mr. Bernlohr was a 1948 graduate of Butler High School and went on to earn an undergraduate degree at California (Pa.) University and then a master's degree in education at Westminster College, New Wilmington.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and Navy Reserve, as a Lieutenant, JG stateside during the Korean War era, serving as a navigator and electronics officer. Mr. Bernlohr worked as an educator in Columbus, Ohio, a teacher and guidance counselor at Butler High School and an administrator at Butler County Community College, serving at various times as dean of students, dean of academic affairs and dean of continuing education, retiring in 1988 after 21 years of service to BC3.

He was a lifetime member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Butler County Amateur Radio Association in Butler and the Elks Lodge. Mr. Bernlohr was a member of the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio, Butler Lodge #272 Free and Accepted Masons, Pittsburgh Syria Shrine and various educational/scholastic professional organizations. He was an avid Amateur “Ham” Radio operator since 1953, Amateur Radio License W3WXZ, and enjoyed motorcycling and keeping up with current electronics and technology.

Mr. Bernlohr is survived by his wife, Billie Jean (Deal) Bernlohr, who he married Aug. 21, 1959; one son, George Matthew Bernlohr of Winterset, Iowa; and one daughter, Laurie Ann Bernlohr-Buck and her husband, James, of Hamilton, N.J.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, David Milton Bernlohr.

BERNLOHR — There will be no public visitation for George Louis Bernlohr, who died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014.Private funeral services were held at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler, with the Rev. Dr. Alden Towberman of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating.Private burial took place in the North Side Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 733 Third Avenue, Suite 510, New York, NY 10017 (www.ccfa.org) or to donor's favorite charity.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
