A technology issue preventing fire and medical emergency personnel from receiving 911 texts — in addition to the typical radio alerts — has been resolved as of Wednesday afternoon, according to assistant director Rob McClafferty.

The issue did not involve the center’s software or prevent county residents from texting 911, McClafferty said Thursday, Aug. 22, nor did it prevent the center from receiving residents’ emergency text messages.

Director Steve Bicehouse said the issue, which affected emergency dispatch texts, stemmed from the center’s internet service provider.

After about a week of on-and-off issues with dispatchers sending texts to emergency personnel, McClafferty said the system was back up.

During this time, Bicehouse said personnel continued to use pagers to receive alerts from dispatchers. Dispatchers have used pagers for over 30 years, Bicehouse said.

“At no point was this impacting public safety,” McClafferty said.

McClafferty said that text messages include the same information relayed through radio alerts but with additional details, such as caller information.
