Riders will head to Shanksville
CRANBERRY TWP — A “flight” of 40 motorcycle riders from Cranberry Township will roll into Shanksville in Somerset County on Sept. 11 as part of the Let’s Roll Flight 93 Memorial Ride.
Cranberry is one of the starting points for the memorial ride, which will raise money for the Flight 93 memorial.
This Sept. 11 marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States, which includes the flight that crashed near Shanksville.
THE CHAMBER of Commerce and SMC Business Councils of Pittsburgh, are hosting the event in Cranberry.
Susan Balla, THE CHAMBER executive director, said the chamber got involved because it wanted to be a part of the celebration of the completion of the first phase of the memorial in Shanksville and to honor those aboard Flight 93.
Each flight consists of 40 riders, who were required to raise at least $1,000 to fund the Flight 93 Memorial, which will be dedicated for the second and third phases of construction.
The event has raised nearly $200,000.
Each of the riders will carry a flag with the name of one of the 40 passengers and crew members and on Sept. 11 join 250 fellow motorcycle riders from across the state on the trip to the dedication ceremony.
The Cranberry flight captain is Bob DeLucia, a chamber member and owner of Star Limousine, Cranberry Taxi and Veterans Taxi services.
The riders at a kick off event on Thursday at Quaker Steak & Lube will learn the names of the honorees from Flight 93 and receive a flag commemorating them as well as a picture and biography.
The riders will gather at the restaurant at 10 a.m. on Sept. 10.
The Cranberry flight will travel to Seven Springs Resort for an overnight stay and concert by country music artist Darryl Worley.
The next morning the bikers will leave for Shanksville.
