High school sports roundup: Freeport, Butler golfers move on to WPIALs

Freeport senior Stephen Evans shot a 74 in the Section 1-2A tournament at Buffalo Golf Course on Monday, qualifying him for the first round of the WPIAL tournament.

Joining him at Youghiogheny Country Club near McKeesport on Sept. 23 will be teammates Ethan Crooks and Cam Zigo, who carded a 77 and 82, respectively. The target score to advance was 82.

Class 3A — In the Section 3 qualifier at Slippery Rock Golf Club, four Butler golfers advanced, led by Anthony Trombatt, who carded a 75.

Also advancing for the Golden Tornado were Levi McClellan (78), Blake Scott (79) and Jase Renwick (80). The target score was 80.

Girls soccer

Butler earned a convincing Section 3-4A victory on the road, overwhelming Allderdice 5-0.

Cecelia Wolford scored twice while Lucia Leyland had four assists for the Golden Tornado (4-4, 2-2).

Ava Soley, Ella Nichols and Kaitlynn Plopi also scored in the win. Sydney Patterson added an assist.

Freeport 1, Burrell 0 — Camryn Woods scored an unassisted goal in overtime for the Yellowjackets (5-1, 3-1).

Girls tennis

Sydney Blucher and Gianna Guandolo teamed up for a doubles win, Seneca Valley’s lone victory in a 4-1 loss to North Allegheny.

The duo defeated the Tigers’ Cynthia Li and Alexa Richey 6-0, 6-4.

Montour 3, Butler 2 — Winning for the Tornado (5-5) were Sophia Kingsley (B) in singles play and the doubles tandem of Cassie Busler/Lindsey Lipp.

Boys soccer

North Catholic’s Arthur Mendonca scored three goals in a 12-0 defeat of Leechburg. The Trojans improved to 7-2, 6-1 in section play.

Slippery Rock 2, Hickory 0 — Wade Freehling and Max Kovacik scored for the Rockets.

Alex Cagle added an assist and Josh Book earned the shutout in net.

Girls golf

Butler received a 42 from Paige Ponteous and a 44 from Madi Wolfe in a 183-189 victory over Blackhawk at Hiland Golf Course.

The Cougars were paced by Savanna Stile’s 39.

The Golden Tornado improved to 8-6 on the season.

KSAC — At Foxburg Country Club, A-C Valley’s Ruby Watson shot 55 to place fourth in the individual standings.

Moniteau’s Sophee Hazlet came in with a 56 as the Warriors finished with 171 strokes, 20 behind Cranberry for first place.

Girls volleyball

Lily Staab tallied six kills and four aces in Moniteau’s 3-2 loss at Franklin.

The Knights won the match by scores of 25-13, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-13. Emily Matz added six kills and four aces and Bella Hernandez five kills and six aces.

Brookville 3, A-C Valley 2 — The Raiders downed the Falcons by scores of 22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-9.

Ava Snyder totaled 10 service points and eight kills for the Falcons. Malia Page had 12 points and eight kills, Maddy Dehart 12 kills and five blocks.

Nichole Wingard and Lexi Altman both added 12 assists, with Altman dropping five kills.
