Five months after Pittsburgh was announced as an expansion franchise in the United Soccer League W, the club has an official name and logo.

Pittsburgh will go by the Riveters, with a matching Rosie the Riveter-inspired logo in the city’s traditional black, gold and red, the franchise announced Wednesday.

The nickname earned 53% of a club-sponsored fan vote, drawing 10,000 votes in total.

Rosie the Riveter has ties to Pittsburgh. The World War II-era poster, with the slogan “We Can Do It,” was created by Pittsburgh-area native J. Howard Miller for Westinghouse.

Pittsburgh Riveters SC, which was named an expansion club in April, will begin play in 2025. They are owned by the same group that owns Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC of the USL. It comes 12 years after the Riverhounds Development Academy formed a girls academy team.

The club will begin its inaugural season in May with a schedule that will include 10-12 matches, half of which will be played in their home stadium, Highmark Stadium, according to CBS.

The USL W is a pre-professional women’s soccer league founded in 2021 and began play in 2022. All players maintain amateur status, made up mainly of players of college age or close. It includes 80 clubs across the country.
