High school sports roundup: Davin Henry’s tally lifts Karns City boys soccer; Freeport, Mars volleyball win

Freshman Davin Henry’s first varsity goal was a big one Thursday night. It came in overtime to lift Karns City’s boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over Saint Marys.

Kaydin Wilson scored KC’s first goal. Henry and Josh Peters both had an assist while Brock Dittman made five saves in net.

Mars 3, Shaler 0 — Sean Scanlon had a goal and assist for the Planets.

Nick Butler and Max Davis also scored in the victory. Eli Stasiowski earned the shutout.

North Catholic 14, Valley 1 — Justin Garvey scored three goals and Arthur Mendonca had a pair for the Trojans (8-2, 7-1).

Girls volleyball

CJ Sabo totaled 11 kills and 11 blocks to lead Slippery Rock’s girls volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 win over Sharpsville on Thursday.

The Rockets received seven kills from Kasey Yeager, 21 assists from Zoey Pankratz and seven digs apiece from Lexi Plesakov and Adi Novad. Slippery Rock defeated the Blue Devils by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 17-25, 25-11 and 15-13.

Freeport 3, Hampton 1 — Alaina Whitlinger’s 15 kills helped the Yellowjackets (7-0, 5-0) remain unbeaten.

Leah Schreckengost added nine kills and 27 service points. Jayme Radvan (seven) and Payton Woods (five) had 12 kills between them. Caylee Zembrzuski and Jaisa Gaillot both had 18 assists.

Mars 3, Knoch 1 – Karlee Buterbaugh led the Knights with seven kills in a section loss to the Planets by set scores of 25-9, 22-25, 25-16, 25-14.

Jess Farbacher had 11 digs and five kills for Knoch (3-4, 1-3 section), and Alena Tekely had 12 assists and 10 digs.

Rylee Wooldridge tallied 20 kills for Mars. Ella Nicotra and Cecilia Christy both dropped 10 kills. Gabi Weidemann paced the offense with 40 assists.

Girls soccer

Layla Colsey, Hanna Dailey and Katelyn VanDyke each netted two goals in Karns City’s 7-0 win against Saint Marys.

Carleigh Lucas added a goal. Aubrey Price contributed three assists, VanDyke two assists, Colsey and Phoebe Brandon one assist apiece.

North Allegheny 3, Butler 0 – The Golden Tornado's two-game winning streak came to an end in shutout fashion. No stats were reported.

Girls golf

Butler edged Shaler 190-195 at Suncrest Golf Course.

Paige Ponteous had a 43 for Butler and Rylee Gage a 47. Izzy Sciulli paced the Titans with a 44.

The Golden Tornado closed the regular season with a record of 9-6 and 7-5 in section play.

Mars 196, Seneca Valley 201 — The Planets topped the Raiders at Connoquenessing Country Club for their 10th win of the season. Individual efforts were not reported.

KSAC — Hayden Hilliard led Moniteau’s effort with a 46 at Hi-Level Golf Course.

Gabriella Shearer carded a 47 for the Warriors, who tallied 142 strokes to place runner-up in the team standings, three behind Cranberry.

Girls tennis

Shady Side Academy's Meriwether McCargo won the WPIAL Girls Tennis Class 3A Singles Championship on Thursday, and Belle Vernon's Gabriella Dusi won the Class 2A title. Dusi, the No. 1 seed who beat North Catholic's Brea Kelley in Wednesday's quarterfinal, swept Hampton's Grace Stitt 6-1, 6-0 in the final. McCargo, also the top seed, won a three-set battle with Penn-Trafford's Amelia Williams 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5).
