High school sports roundup: 7 locals advance to WPIAL 3A boys golf final; Braun sets Freeport course record

The field for the final round of the WPIAL Class 3A Boys Golf Individual Championship is set.

Seven Butler county golfers advanced Tuesday to the final 18 holes, which will be held Oct. 1 at Oakmont Country Club. The top 36 golfers and ties advanced out of Tuesday’s first round at Southpointe Golf Club, in Canonsburg.

Levi McClellan was the lone Butler golfer to qualify after shooting an 82, tied for 26th, including an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole.

Brody Pirt was the top local finisher, carding an 80 to tie for 19th. He was joined by Seneca Valley teammates Tyler Garvin (t-26, 82) and Anthony Cardosi and Marcos Lopez, who tied for 34th with an 83.

Mars’ Lukas Singh finished t-22nd with an 81 and will be joined next week by teammate Will Campbell (t-34, 83).

Fox Chapel’s Carson Kittsley shot the low round of the day, a 1-over 73.

KSAC — A-C Valley/Union finished fourth with a 480 in the KSAC Championship at Clarion Oaks Golf Course. Joe Rapp led the Falcon Knights with an 82, fifth best in the field.

Clarion won the team title with a 436; Clarion’s Kam Kerle and Keystone’s Sean Karg tied for the top individual score with a 74.

Karns City’s Chloe Fritch carded the best score of Butler County golfers, a 76, good enough for third place. Connor Ealy led Moniteau’s group of golfers with 90, tied for ninth.

Cross country

Michael Braun set a new Freeport course record in 16 minutes, 34 seconds as the Yellowjackets cruised to a 19-37 win over Deer Lakes. Freeport’s girls team beat Deer Lakes 17-39 and Highlands 15-50.

Butler tri-meet Butler swept Central Catholic and Oakland Catholic in a tri-meet at Schenley Park. Freshman Zari Golojuh ran the top girls time in 19:39 as Butler girls (4-1) swept the top five spots to score 15 points. The boys (4-1) were led by Logan Rogers (16:56) and ran the top four times for 16 points.

North Catholic tri-meet — Tyler Carroll crossed the finish line first in North Catholic’s tri-meet, finishing with a time of 16:29. The Trojans beat Aquinas Academy 16-40 and Avonworth 19-40.

Slippery Rock vs. Greenville — Slippery Rock swept Greenville in a duel-meet, the girls winning 15-40 and the boys 16-40. Kasey Yeager led the Rockets girls (3-1) with a time of 22:22, and Hunter Doerflinger won the boys race in 19:06 for the Rockets (2-2).

Boys soccer

Max Kovacik recorded a hat trick in Slippery Rock’s 5-0 shutout at Sharon.

Jesse Gahring also pocketed a goal while adding two assists. Logan Berry scored in the victory.

North Catholic 4, Our Lady of Sacred Heart 1 — Justin Garvey tallied two goals and an assist in the Trojans’ home victory. Arthur Mendonca and Angelo Amelio had a goal and assist each.

Knoch 3, Armstrong 2 — The Knights improved to 5-7 with the win.

Mars 0, Hampton 0 — The Planets’ Eli Stasiowski recorded the shutout in net.

Girls volleyball

Ashley Ragan had 11 kills and Zoey Pokrantz dished out 20 assists as Slippery Rock swept Oil City by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-21.

Pine-Richland 3, Butler 0 — Channing Popovich had seven kills and three blocks for the Golden Tornado, who lost in straight sets by scores of 25-23, 26-24, 25-19.

Knoch 3, Valley 0 — Jess Farbacher had 11 digs and nine kills for the Knights (4-4, 2-3 section). Laney Snyder added seven kills.
