High school sports roundup: North dominates in tennis section tourney

North Catholic is guaranteed to claim a Section 3-2A championship in girls tennis on Thursday.

Both teams involved in the doubles title match are made up of Trojanettes. The tandem of Brea Kelley/Katie Hardy will face Samantha Falcon/Evie Marche at 2 p.m. at Greensburg Racquet Club.

Kelley and Hardy, the tournament’s top-seeded duo, received a bye in the first round before dispatching teams from Indiana and Ellis School.

Falcon and Marche survived matches against teams from Riverview, Hampton and Indiana to reach the final.

Knoch’s teams of Alana Moroney/Abby Markiewicz and Mackenzie Glassic/Chloe Winters both fell in the first round.

Class 3A — In the Section 2 tournament, held in Wexford, Butler’s Laini Spohn and Emily Hinch topped Mars’ Bella Pazzaglia and Elaiha Riegler 10-5 in the first round, but fell in the quarterfinal round to a team from North Hills.

The Golden Tornado’s Maggie Bodamer and Olivia Porneluzi lost in the preliminary round to a duo from Shaler.

Cross Country

Moniteau swept Karns City, with the Warrior boys winning 23-32 and the girls topping the Gremlins 24-31.

Karns City’s Noah Weiland placed first in the boys race with a time of 18:17. Moniteau’s Peyton Beck was runner-up at 19:15.

In the girls race, Moniteau’s Alexis Kirschner was first in 22:24, followed by her sister, Brinn Kirschner (23:01). Miley Mooney placed third (24:23) for the Gremlins.

Girls volleyball

Adi Novad (12) and Ashley Ragan (11) combined for 23 kills in Slippery Rock’s sweep of Hickory.

Slippery Rock won by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-14.

Kalyn Just contributed 11 digs, Lexi Plesakov 10 digs and Zoey Pokrantz 23 assists for the Rockets.

Butler 3, Hempfield 2 — This victory against the Spartans came by scores of 25-18, 15-25, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-13.

Audrey Lehman had 15 kills, 15 digs and three aces for the Tornado, Raina Lewandowski 12 kills and 14 digs and Channing Popovich nine kills and nine blocks.

Girls soccer

Lucia Leyland scored for Butler in a 2-1 loss to Pine-Richland.

The Golden Tornado’s record fell to 5-6, 2-4 in section play.

DuBois Area 3, Karns City 2 — Hanna Dailey and Katelyn VanDyke both scored a goal in this loss for the Gremlins. Phoebe Brandon added an assist.

Freeport 2, Shady Side Academy 2 — This stalemate featured goals from Freeport’s Camryn Woods (PK) and Elena Jenkins.

Nia Disanti had an assist for the Yellowjackets (7-1-1, 4-1-1).
