Wednesday — Police reported a Nigerian fraud scheme has recently targeted several city residents.According to the scheme, Web users are sent e-mails claiming they have won a free iPOD, computer or other prize. Next comes the instruction to provide their names and addresses to collect their winnings by mail. But instead of any prize, those targeted receive a postal package filled with counterfeit travelers' checks. The recipients are instructed to cash the checks and send the money back to a specified address. They are also told they can keep 10 to 15 percent of the money from the phony checks.Police said if the recipients refuse to comply with the instructions, the unknown scammers threaten to send someone to their homes "to confront them over this."
