College sports roundup: Slippery Rock football’s Brayden Long semifinalist for Campbell Trophy
Slippery Rock quarterback Brayden Long’s strong start to the 2024 season received further recognition this week.
The senior was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy in NCAA Division II, known as the “Academic Heisman” as an academy honor to a college football player. Long is one of 18 semifinalists; finalists receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship.
Butler County Community College beat Penn State-Beaver 3-0 on Thursday by set scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.
Josie Russo, Dakota Weldon and Molly Bissell all had eight kills in the win for BC3 (13-0), while Anora Robare led the way with 15 assists. Virginia Recchia and Johnna Hill each had 11 digs.
Xander Downing, a Butler High graduate, shot a low round of 74 to lead BC3 to a 314-319 win over Westmoreland County Community College on Tuesday. BC3 (113-0) also got 80s from Ben Perris (Knoch) and Jaxon Salata (80).
