Connoquenessing borough mulls bonding some roads

CONNOQUENESSING — At their meeting on Tuesday evening, Oct. 1, council members discussed the possibility of bonding some of the borough’s roads to prevent further damage from commercial vehicles.

The area discussed Tuesday is near the Leslie Farms neighborhood, which includes Shelton Place Drive and Leslie Farms Drive. According to multiple council members, the borough has had problems recently with businesses running heavy vehicles down these streets and damaging the road.

Bonding the roads would allow the borough to set a weight limit and post signs to warn drivers of the limit.

“The roads are kind of getting beat up as the commercial trucks come through,” said council member Chris Logan.

“I’ve called them multiple times and asked them, ‘please do not go through here,’” said council member Jason Spear, referring to several area construction and contracting firms.

Spear said the process of applying for and getting a local road bonded by the state Department of Transportation is cumbersome.

“It's a long, drawn-out process, and we have to have signage put up, and the state has to be involved,” Spear said. “And we need a traffic assessment on each street.”

Councilors voted to contact the borough engineer, Tom Thompson of Gannett Fleming, to inquire about the first steps in commissioning the traffic studies needed for bonding roads.

In other news, the borough was going to award the contract for its snow removal services at this meeting, but no bids came in. The bid will be re-advertised.

However, the borough did receive three bids for repaving the parking lot at the municipal building, located on Constitution Avenue near the borough park. Council voted to table the awarding of a contract for the repaving while the borough’s engineer reviews the bids.

A contract was awarded to Cox's Ag Services in Lancaster Township to repair a drain box located at the corner of Washington Street and Constitution Avenue.
