Butler Catholic School recently announced the establishment of a new scholarship resulting from the generosity of a late member of All Saints Parish.

The inaugural Andrew Kuehn Memorial Scholarship was presented Sept. 20 to Tommy Edwards, an eighth-grader at Butler Catholic.

Kuehn bequeathed $40,000 to the school for a 10-year scholarship fund. Annual scholarships are to be awarded to a Butler Catholic student in seventh or eighth grades who shows promise on the piano or keyboard.

Kuehn, who died Feb. 12, was a musician at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church for many years and gave private piano and guitar lessons.

He also taught French for 49 years in the Butler Area School District.

John Hazur, principal at Butler Catholic, was excited to announce the scholarship and winning student on Sept. 20 during the all-school liturgy.

“Music has the power to express what words cannot,” Hazur said. “Tommy Edwards has shown exceptional talent and dedication in bringing melodies to life.”

Per Kuehn’s instructions, a $4,000 scholarship will be awarded annually. Tommy’s funds will apply to the 2024-25 school year.

“We are incredibly proud to recognize him for earning this scholarship on behalf of Andrew Kuehn as a testament to his hard work, passion and unwavering commitment to excellence,” Hazur said. “May this achievement be just the beginning of a beautiful musical journey.”

A news release from the school recognized that generous donations like Kuehn’s and others make Catholic education accessible and a viable option for families in the Butler County region.
