Robert A. “Shank” Skander, 71, of Mars, died Thursday evening in the comfort of his home and surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on Dec. 21, 1943, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alice Miller Skander Jr.

Shank had been an iron worker for the Iron Workers Union Local 3, where he was a member for 50 years.

He was a social member of the Mars VFW. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Retired Boys Golf League.

Surviving are his wife and the love of his life, Patricia Ebert Skander, whom he married on May 22, 2010; four daughters, Robin Graham (Jay) of Penn Township, Shelly Campitelli (Gabe) of Cranberry Township, Jodi McKevitt (Sean) of West View and Mindy Pletz of Cranberry Township; one son, Robert A. Skander, Jr. (Tammy) of Ellwood City; two stepdaughters, Brenda Mazinski (Jason) of Seven Fields and Christina Lee (Paul) of Butler; 16 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Janice Govan (Frank) of Valencia and Stephanie Grove of Mars; one brother, Dale “Tony” Skander of Evans City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and David Skander.

SKANDER — Friends of Robert A. “Shank” Skander, who died Thursday, July 23, 2015, are invited to a celebration of Shank's life at 1 p.m. Aug. 21, at Mars VFW Post 7505, 331 Mars-Valencia Road, Mars, with the Rev. Robert Martin, pastor of the Valencia United Methodist Church, officiating.The family will greet friends at a reception following the service.Memorials may be made to Vitas Healthcare, 2009 Mackenzie Way, Ste 110, Cranberry Twp, PA 16066.Arrangements are under the direction of the McDonald-Aeberli Funeral Home, 238 Crowe Ave. Mars.Condolences are available at www.mcdonald-aeberli.com.
