Of Note: Forever Remembered memorializes the 14 brave astronauts who perished during the loss of orbiters Challenger and Columbia. This permanent exhibit displays personal items from each astronaut and recovered hardware from both orbiters, including a section of Challenger’s left fuselage with American flag and the framework of Columbia’s cockpit windows. Learn about NASA’s physical recovery of the space shuttles, the emotional recovery from these tragic losses, as well as the agency’s return to flight while emphasizing the importance of learning from the past.

Of Note: Family members and NASA worked together to erect the memorial in Section 46, near Memorial Amphitheater.

U.S. Space and Rocket Center

Of Note: This monument is located at the US Space and Rocket Center. The monument is dedicated to the astronauts who died on January 28,1986, 73 seconds into STS-51L when Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. The men and women of the Marshall Space Flight Center are responsible for erecting the monument.

New Mexico Museum of Space History

Of Note: Located in the Astronaut Memorial Garden it is a tribute to the Challenger crew. A simple obelisk with a bronze plaque with the names of the crew members of the mission, it is a sober reminder that the successes we had in space that are shown in the exhibits at the New Mexico Space Museum and Space Hall of Fame, came with a heavy human cost.

Of Note: Large black tombstone features engraved faces of the seven Challenger astronauts and a small bronze replica of the doomed Space Shuttle.

Of Note: Seven trees were planted and dedicated to the memory, spirit and courage of the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Challenger who perished while in flight on January 28, 1986.

Of Note: The Challenger Memorial commemorates the astronauts who lost their lives as a result of an endeavor to open up science and space. This massive memorial was not intended to be a somber remembrance of these sacrifices but was instead designed to represent a spirit and sensibility that would transcend this tragedy to inspire audiences across the eras.
