High school sports roundup: North Catholic boys advance in WPIAL golf playoffs; tennis makes quarters

North Catholic’s boys golf team tallied 390 strokes to place first out of nine teams at Tuesday’s WPIAL Class 2A team semifinal at The Links at Spring Church.

The effort advances the Trojans to Thursday’s district final at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course.

Ben Kandravy’s 1-over-par 73 led North’s performance. Also scoring for the Trojans was Luke Lamb (75), Chris Faber (76), Eric Proie (81) and Dylan Murray (85).

The top three teams are moving on.

Freeport missed advancing by a single stroke. The Yellowjackets, paced by Ethan Crooks’ 74, tallied 411 strokes to finish fourth. McGuffey placed third with 410.

Scoring for Freeport were Stephan Evans (80), Cam Zigo (84), Gavin Tola (86) and Max Zigo (87).

Elizabeth Forward (393) finished second.

Class 3A — In a team semifinal at Indian Run Golf Club in Washington County, Seneca Valley totaled 392 strokes and placed fifth out of seven teams.

The Raiders’ golfers included Tyler Garvin (74), Brody Pirt (75), Marcos Lopez (78), Josh Marquardt (81) and Vinci Villella (84).

Belle Vernon (379), West Allegheny (379) and South Fayette (382) were the three teams to advance.

Girls tennis

North Catholic, the No. 1 seed in the WPIAL Class 2A team tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory over Ellwood City.

The Trojanettes will take on No. 9 Winchester Thurston at 3 p.m. Thursday at Cranberry Township Park.

Girls volleyball

Maddy Dehart had 15 kills and six blocks to lead A-C Valley to a sweep of Moniteau by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22.

Grace Agostino added six kills in the win.

For the Warriors, Lily Staab tallied eight kills, Sydney Bayless six blocks and Sophia Fleeger 20 assists.

Titusville 3, Slippery Rock 2 — Slippery Rock dropped this match by scores of 13-25, 25-20, 25-11, 16-25 and 9-15.

Marissa Metzka had six aces in defeat, Adi Novad 10 kills and Lyla Runtas nine digs.

Lexi Caldwell (16) and Zoey Pokrantz (15) combined for 31 assists.

Butler 3, North Hills 1 — Audrey Lehman had 11 kills, leading the Golden Tornado to victory by set scores of 18-25, 25-9, 25-23, 25-18.

Brynn Cornibe and Channing Popovich each had seven kills for Butler (10-4, 3-4 section), and Sarah Lucas recorded 24 digs.

North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 0 — The Raiders slipped to 7-7 (2-5 section) in the loss to the unbeaten Tigers.

Cross country

Slippery Rock’s Hunter Doerflinger placed second and Connor Zorn third in a 23-33 loss to Hickory’s boys.

Doerflinger came in at 18 minutes, 59 seconds; Zorn in 19:43 for the Rockets (3-3).

Hickory’s Caden Riethmiller placed first in 17:29.

The Rocket girls fell to 4-2 on the season with a 19-36 loss to the Hornets.

Sophomore Kasey Yeager paced Slippery Rock by finishing third (21:52). The Hornets’ Mira Moschillo took first place at 20:35.

Boys soccer

North Catholic received goals from five different players in a 5-1 win at Burrell.

Finding the net for the Trojans (12-3, 10-2) was Gabe Nonino, Arthur Mendonca, Matthew Liscinsky, Austin English and Justin Garvey.

Angelo Amelio contributed two assists, Brody Kennedy one along with Garvey and Nonino.

Central Clarion 5, Karns City 1 — Brock Dittman made 16 saves in this loss.

Carter Ritzert scored for the Gremlins (5-9-1).

Freeport 1, Highlands 0 — Angelo Porco’s goal was assisted by Eli Hassler.

Jacob Franks earned the clean sheet for the Yellowjackets (7-6-2, 4-5-2).

Girls soccer

Bree O'Donnell tallied four goals in Karns City’s 12-0 blanking of Central Clarion.

Hanna Dailey scored three times and added four assists, Bella Shields two goals and two assists.

Phoebe Brandon pitched in a goal and three assists, Katelyn VanDyke a pair of goals.
