No. 6 Slippery Rock offense pops Gannon as huge PSAC football battle vs California (Pa.) looms

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock’s offense nearly pitched a perfect game despite an admittedly imperfect win.

But The Rock football coach Shawn Lutz will take it.

SRU’s offense scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions Saturday in a 35-17 homecoming victory over Gannon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium. SRU then turned the ball over on downs at the Gannon 5-yard line with 5:39 remaining before running out the clock with a first down at the Gannon 7 on the game’s final possession.

SRU never punted in the contest.

“This is what our offense is capable of doing,” Lutz said. “That unit took a major step forward today.”

No. 6 Slippery Rock improved to 6-0, 3-0 this season with a showdown at California (Pa.) on Oct. 19 with first place in the PSAC West at stake. Gannon slipped to 1-5, 1-2.

SRU entered the game ranked second nationally in third-down defense, opponents converting only 17.9% of the time. But the Golden Knights converted 10 of 15 third-down opportunities and put together drives of 17 and 18 plays in the first half.

Gannon was limited to thee points on those possessions, however. Bryson Costa drilled a 23-yard field goal but was wide left on a 33-yard attempt to end the half as The Rock took a 14-3 lead into intermission.

“It’s a collective mindset once the opponent gets into the red zone,” Rock defensive end Todd Hill said. “We talk to each other and simply get determined to stop things right there.”

“It’s not that our defense played poorly today, but we have a standard here,” Lutz said. “We couldn’t get off the field on third down. That’s not who we are.”

SRU quarterback Brayden Long threw for 319 yards an three touchdowns, connecting with Mike Solomon from 6 yards out and Logan Ramper from 21 in the first half. He ran for a 3-yard score in the second half before finding JayJay Jordan for a 44-yard TD bomb for The Rock’s final score of the day.

The Rock also rushed for 129 yards, led by Chris D’Or’s 78.

“Everything was working today,” Long said. “It all starts with our guys up front. They communicate with each other, and when those five guys are working together, we’re able to do a lot of things.

“I didn’t get sacked again today. That’s a credit to our line.”

Long has only been sacked twice all season — both times at Shippensburg.

Left tackle Joe Cooper is the only returning starter up front for The Rock. Other starters are left guard Marshall Futrell, center Cade Cameron, right guard Luke Pugliese and right tackle Nathan Waltman, a Karns City graduate.

“I can’t say enough about those guys,” Lutz said. “They’ve got it figured out and we’re moving in the right direction. (Offensive line coach) Chris Conrad has done a tremendous job with that group.”

Gannon coach Erik Raeburn could not be reached for comment after the game.
