High school sports roundup: Slippery Rock boys soccer wins region title; Butler girls thump Latrobe

Max Kovacik’s goal with just over three minutes left in double-overtime lifted the Slippery Rock boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over visiting Sharon on Monday.

The result earns the Rockets (11-6, 9-1) the District 10 Region 2 title outright. It is the program’s third straight region crown.

A well-placed free kick from Zach Lasko preceded Kovacik’s game-winner. Wade Freehling scored for Slippery Rock earlier in the game off an assist from Caleb Clark.

Dylan Freehling was in net for the win.

North Catholic 9, Valley 0 — Justin Garvey scored twice while Nathan Salac and Gabriel Martins both added two assists as the Trojans (14-4, 12-2) closed the regular season in dominant fashion.

Also scoring for North was Gabe Nonino, Angel Amelio, Gannon Pappas, Michael Riley, Arthur Mendonca, Michael Horton and Evan Laubenthal.

Girls volleyball

A-C Valley rallied from a 2-0 deficit, only to fall to a very strong Keystone squad 3-2.

Ava Snyder tallied 10 points, 10 digs and four kills for the Falcons (9-9).

The Panthers (18-2) prevailed by scores of 25-17, 25-15, 17-25, 23-25 and 15-13.

Maddy Dehart contributed 18 points, seven kills and seven blocks. Nichole Wingard had 13 assists.

Eisenhower 3, Moniteau 0 — Lily Staab had six kills for the Warriors, who lost by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19.

Sydney Bayless added three kills and three blocks for Moniteau.

Girls soccer

Karns City received goals from five different players in a 5-0 shutout of Forest Area.

Katelyn VanDyke, Layla Colsey, Hanna Dailey, Lexi Neff and Sarah Dodd each found the net.

Dodd, Bree O'Donnell and Phoebe Brandon (2) had the assists for KC, which finishes the regular season 14-4.

Butler 7, Latrobe 2 — The Golden Tornado (9-8) moved above .500 with this lopsided win over the Wildcats.

Lucia Leyland and Ava Soley both scored twice for Butler. Sydney Patterson, Kat McGuire and Jess Calhoun each scored once.

Girls tennis

Monday’s WPIAL team semifinal matches were postponed a day due to weather.

North Catholic, the No. 1 seed in Class 2A, will now face fifth-seeded Oakland Catholic at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Shady Side Academy, with a trip to Wednesday’s championship match on the line.
