KC looking out for students as it develops dual sports policy

Everyone knows that at least one person in their life who is juggling a plate that is way too full. Piled all on one plate is an appetizer or two, dinner and dessert.

It’s too much for one plate.

As adults, we’re responsible for our own plate. If we take on too much, our arms may get weak. Spaghetti may trail off the side of the dish. A meatball may roll out the door as in the children’s tune, “On Top of Spaghetti.”

For those who pile on too much pasta, the plate might fall, shatter and leave a saucy mess on the floor.

But again, as adults, we do look out for one another, but that plate is ours.

Considering we all know an adult who struggles to say “no” to yet another task, it makes sense that many of our children may not have mastered the same time management skills yet.

High school students may want to do more and more. They may want to fill their plate with educational and sports opportunities for their future and/or just spend time with friends.

It’s important that the adults in their lives look out for them.

The athletic guidelines for dual sports approved by the Karns City Area School District board at its meeting Monday, Oct. 14, is a stellar example of adults looking out for children.

The athletic guidelines are intended to “strengthen communication channels among coaches and student-athletes to ensure those participating in multiple sports can balance practice and competition schedules,” the Eagle reported.

The goal is to protect the health of student-athletes, superintendent Eric Ritzert said at a September meeting that introduced the policy for discussion.

“The policy will help us keep the risk of injury lower by ensuring athletes have a chance to balance their schedules and recover between practices,” he said at that time.

Kudos to the adults who led the charge in making this policy change.
