College sports roundup: North Catholic grad helps Penn State-Altoona golf to conference title

North Catholic grad Ethan Ellis tied for third with a two-day total of 155 strokes to help Penn State-Altoona win a fourth straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men’s golf championship.

The Lions won by 27 shots at Butler Country Club and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in May 2025.

Women’s volleyball

Josie Russo had 13 kills and seven blocks as Butler County Community College’s volleyball team improved to 19-0 with a 3-1 victory against Penn State Greater Allegheny on Tuesday.

Molly Bissell tallied 14 kills and Dakota Weldon 12 kills for the Pioneers, who won by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-12 and 25-11.

Adriona Arnold added 21 assists, Anora Robare 19 assists and Nina Szymanski 25 digs.

Men’s basketball

Pitt was picked to finish seventh in the ACC in a preseason coaches poll released Tuesday.

Duke, headlined by incoming five-star prospect Cooper Flagg, was picked to win the conference.

Pitt senior guard Ishmael Leggett was named a preseason All-ACC second-team player. Leggett is the reigning conference sixth man of the year after scoring 12.3 points per game last season.

Pitt begins the season Nov. 4 against Radford.
