Braden Slater scores 4 TDs, nearly hits 300 yards; Karns City football routs third straight opponent

KARNS CITY — Braden Slater struck again — with a little help from his friends.

Two weeks after scoring six touchdowns in a win at Redbank Valley, Karns City’s senior halfback scored four TDs and accumulated 298 all-purpose yards in the Gremlins’ 51-0 senior night football victory over Keystone on Friday night at Diehl Stadium.

Overall, the Gremlins (6-2) produced 516 yards of offense, including 401 on the ground.

Karns City has won three straight games — averaging 60 points pr contest — since a 65-0 loss at home to Central Clarion.

“We had to pick ourselves up after that loss and keep going,” Slater said. “Our entire team committed to turning things around. We’re playing our best football right now and it’s fun.”

Slater had eight carries for 178 yards, including touchdown runs of 10, 8 and 91 yards Friday night. He also caught a 1-yard touchdown pass, had three receptions for 84 yards, booted a 31-yard field goal and returned a kickoff 36 yards.

Slater and the rest of the Gremlin starters left the game before the end of the third quarter.

“Our backs were running hard and our line controlled the game on both sides of the ball,” Karns City head coach Joe Sherwin said. “Everything runs easier when you get the kind of line play we’ve been getting.”

The Gremlins got going quickly on this night. KC’s C.J. Emrick forced a fumble on the game’s first offensive play, Karns City recovering at the Keystone 22. Slater scored on a 10-yard run three plays later.

Karns City scored three touchdowns and a field goal on its first four possessions. The Gremlins took a 31-0 lead into halftime, accumulating 252 yards on the ground in the first two quarters.

“That’s an awfully good football team,” Keystone head coach Todd Smith said. “We did some good things early, but we have a few key players out (with injury) and we hope to get them back next week.

“If we beat Coudersport next week, we’re in the playoffs. That’s how we have to look at this.”

Keystone quarterback Dom Corcetti threw for 171 yards in going over the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season. The Panthers (3-5) turned the ball over on downs four times in KC territory, including once at the Gremlins’ 12-yard line.

KC quarterback Cole Johnston threw for 115 yards and a touchdown. He also rumbled 59 yards for KC’s second score of the game on a play-fake. Johnston intercepted a pass as well.

Riley Hamilton and Bodey Anderson scored touchdowns on the ground for the Gremlins.

“A lot of people got involved tonight,” Sherwin said. “That’s what we want.”

Smith said he likes playing quality teams like Karns City “because we learn a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on in games like this.”
