Jefferson Township may seek help from Saxonburg for police services

On Oct. 14, Jefferson Township supervisors heard about the possibility of using the Saxonburg Police Department to supplement police coverage.

That conversation followed others between Saxonburg and Clinton and Summit townships that would have Saxonburg assist the smaller departments. Summit police are now working with Saxonburg police, while Clinton Township declined.

Jefferson Township appeared to be receptive to the idea. Supervisors agreed to send a board member to meet with Saxonburg police.

The potential agreement would have the Saxonburg Police Department dispatch a designated officer to patrol Jefferson Township for 20 to 24 hours per week and take responsibility for local calls such as vandalism and domestic disturbances.

Under the terms of the proposal, the designated officer would enforce Jefferson Township code, but his or her wages would be paid by the borough of Saxonburg.

“Jefferson Township would receive the proceeds of any and all fines that are issued,” Saxonburg Mayor Bill Gillespie said.

The agreement, if accepted, would not replace service being provided to Jefferson Township by state police. Rather, it would supplement it.

For many Jefferson Township residents, Saxonburg is a stone’s throw away — a short walk to Main Street for a parade, an easy drive for groceries.

The proposal makes sense. Quick, reliable service amid domestic disturbances is especially important. Timing can make all the difference.

Additionally, the presence of officers patrolling roads can be a deterrent to speeding and other traffic violations.

At a glance, it seems a positive partnership.

We do hope Jefferson Township supervisors do their due diligence by speaking with Summit Township police about its similar agreement, in place since June 2021, as well as with Clinton Township leaders regarding their decision to decline.

If all signs point to go, by all means keep the conversation going. Enhanced police services can only benefit residents.
