LANCASTER TWP — Township supervisors filled two recently vacated staff positions at their meeting Monday, Oct. 21.

The board unanimously approved the appointment of Ed Spurr as roadmaster and code enforcement officer and Michael Spiker as road foreman.

Spurr will be paid $36.08 per hour. The road foreman is a union position thanks to a bargaining agreement the township has in place for its road employees.

“We’ve lost two employees from our road department in the last month, so we’re backfilling those positions,” chairman Greg Kessler said.

Due to the amount of turnover, the hiring process was thorough in the hope it will lead to more stable staffing.

“Mary (Hess), the township manager, interviewed (candidates) separately, narrowed down the field to who she thought was the most qualified, and then I interviewed them,” Kessler said. “We sat down, looked at everybody’s skills sets and hired accordingly.”

LSA grant

The board also took a step toward securing more funding by approving an application for a Local Share Grant for $1 million.

“We have done a poor job the last couple of years applying for grants,” Kessler said. “There’s money out there to be had, so we’re looking at opportunities for grants and then assessing our needs.”

If the township is successful in obtaining the grant, the money can be put toward a number of municipal projects. Supervisors said many of those projects would deal with infrastructure improvements, but some are centered on vehicles that help maintain roads.
