Kathryn ‘Kay’ Matus

Matus

Kathryn N. “Kay” Matus, 88, of Cabot, peacefully joined her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024.

Kay was born on Nov. 24, 1935, to the late George and Kathryn H. (Shimpano) Smitthammer.

The cornerstone of her ever-growing family, Kay enjoyed spending time with her loved ones, instilling her honesty, determination, and love for Jesus in each of their lives. With her husband, Chuck, she hosted countless family gatherings that will be fondly remembered by all who attended.

Locals to the Saxonburg area will remember Kay for her role in the community and the time she spent working as the bookkeeper and store front manager of the C. Matus Company. On a nice day, one could always find Kay sitting in her rocking chair on the front stoop of the store, book in hand. Kay treasured the people she encountered over her decades at the store. In her spare time, Kay also enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, gardening and collecting Nativity scenes.

Kay is survived by her husband Charles Matus III, whom she married Jan. 22, 1991; her children, Jacqueline (Frank) Novosel, George Hamley, Kathryn (Paul) Slizik and MaryLou (David) Norris; her stepsons, K.C. (Debbie) Matus and Matt (Gen) Matus; her nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and her brother, Wayne Smitthammer.

Kay was preceded in death by her son, Darryl Hamley; her grandson, Dylan Hamley; and her sister, Edna Burdick.

Kay’s family would like to thank Suncrest and Monarch Hospice, especially Jackie, Rebecca and Bev, for all of their love and care.
