Hazel Haefner

Haefner

Hazel M. Haefner, 100, of Cranberry Township, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at her home with her husband, Robert J. Haefner, and family at her side. She received last rites by her Pastor, Ron Brown of Hope Lutheran Church, Cranberry Township.

Born Dec. 23, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Hazel was the daughter of the late Annie Kuhn Miller and Ralph Montelle Miller.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 51 years, Robert J. Haefner, whom she met when they joined the same bowling league. Also surviving are her daughters, Bonnie L. (Gary) Fuller of Kane, Pa., and Laura L. Crosby of Evans City; and her son and his wife, Kenneth L. and Roxane Crosby of North Apollo.

Eleven grandchildren include Peter (Wendy) Fuller, Paul Fuller, Michele (Mitchell) Timblin, Amber Fox, Faith (Tom) Atwood, Melinda (Leroy) Bricker, Brian Crosby, Michael Crosby, Annie Crosby, Jason (Jasmine) Menzl and Erin Korbel.

Thirteen great-grandchildren include Jacob Roccabruna, Evan Roccabruna, Jack Bricker, Samuel Atwood, Grace Atwood, Aaron Timblin, Hannah Menzl, Natalie Menzl, Draedan Brewer, Tyler Savage, Conner Savage, Sierra (Nick) Huff and Chance Evans.

There is one great-great-grandchild, Daniel Matthew Huff.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth (Samuel) McDowell, Hope (Frank) Petrosky, Helen (William) Vickless and Rita (Thomas) Weis; and one brother, Ralph Miller Jr.

Hazel grew up in the Pittsburgh area and raised her children in the family home in the suburb of Brentwood borough. In 1973, she married Robert Haefner, whom she met when they joined the same bowling league. He said the yellow-suited beauty really caught his eye! Bob and Hazel made their way into the local newspaper quite a few times. In one Valentine’s Day article, Bob said Hazel was a gift from God. Her response to the reporter was “he’s still trying to make points!” and laughed. Their love was 100% through 51 years. When problems arose, Hazel would remind her family: “This, too, shall pass.” She was a good adviser.

Hazel was a faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church, Cranberry Township, where her favorite hymn was “How Great Thou Art” and favorite Bible verses were John 14:1 and Psalm 23: 5-6. She enjoyed square dancing, for which she made her own dresses; playing Scrabble; and playing cards, which she did quite well until briefly before her passing. She enjoyed time with her family having fun or just visiting. In the late summer you would find her in the kitchen canning the produce Bob had grown in his garden. She once said, “If I wasn't canning, it wouldn’t feel like summer!” She was also known to say she was glad when canning season was over. The family very much enjoyed Mom/Grandma’s homemade and canned goodies such as succotash and especially her raspberry jam, of which there is one treasured jar left. She herself was a treasure and very much loved.
