CALIFORNIA — A former football player at California (Pa.) University is suing the police department and prosecutor that accused him in the beating and stomping of a man outside an off-campus restaurant.
James Williamson’s lawsuit Monday says California Borough police and Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone didn’t have probable cause to charge him and violated his civil rights.
The 21-year-old from Parkville, Md., was one of six California University players charged in the beating that left 30-year-old Lewis Campbell in intensive care with severe brain trauma.
The players were suspended and California forfeited its next game. Williamson is also suing the university.
A judge dismissed charges against Williamson in May.

PITTSBURGH — Five white men have been ordered to stand trial in what prosecutors allege was a racially motivated attack on a black man allegedly thrown onto the tracks of a Pittsburgh commuter rail station.
Allegheny County prosecutors said 21-year-old Ryan Kyle of Pittsburgh and the other defendants boarded a light-rail train on May 30 and encountered Kevin Lockett, who says they shouted curse words and derogatory terms at him.
Kyle, accused of having thrown the victim onto the tracks, is charged with attempted murder.
