AHN shares tips for staying safe while trick-or-treating
While trick-or-treating on Halloween is a beloved ritual that children look forward to every year, it does present some dangers due to the increased number of pedestrians sharing the road with vehicles on residential streets.
The Allegheny Health Network offers five tips for making sure you and your children stay safe while trick-or-treating on Thursday, Oct. 31:
√ No matter what costume a child is wearing, make sure they dress in bright colors or reflective clothing and stay on well-lit streets. Supervise all children younger than 12.
√ Make sure children can see through any decorative masks.
√ Be cautious of any food allergy a child might have, and make sure they don’t receive or consume anything they may be allergic to.
√ Keep children’s sugar intake under control. Pediatric nutrition experts from AHN recommend that children eat no more than 10 small pieces of candy on Halloween night. In addition, separate some candy out to be donated so it doesn’t go to waste.
√ Children should wash their hands before diving into the treats, and make sure their vaccinations are up to date, as cold and flu season is in full swing.
