No. 14 Slippery Rock, led by Brayden Long’s 4 TDs, beats Clarion to keep playoff hopes alive

CLARION — Slippery Rock took to the air — and took off.

Brayden Long threw for 399 yards and four touchdowns Thursday night in leading No. 14 SRU to a 38-22 football road win over Clarion at Memorial Stadium.

The win keeps The Rock (7-1, 4-1) alive for an NCAA Division II playoff spot.

SRU also won the Milk Jug — presented to the annual winner of this rivalry — for the 13th time on 14 years.

"After our loss at Cal last week, this is a new season for us," Long said. "We need to go 1-0 each week from here on out. This is a good way to start the new season."

SRU started that new season with a vertical passing game. Leading by a touchdown at halftime, the team scored points on its first three possessions of the second half to take control.

Long threw touchdown passes to Kam Kruzelyak and Kylon Wilson in that third period. Mason Yohn added a 36-yard field goal early in the fourth for a 38-14 lead.

"Coming in here, we knew they could stop the run," Rock coach Shawn Lutz said. "We decided to trust our quarterback. When we split five receivers out in an open set, not many teams can stop us."

Wilson was a beneficiary of that game plan, catching seven passes for 147 yards and two scores.

"We knew we had to have this one," Wilson said. "Guys were skipping lunch to watch extra film."

SRU generated 510 yards of offense and 24 first downs. Long was not sacked all night.

"Our offensive line was tremendous," Long said.

The Golden Eagles (3-6, 1-4) have dropped six of seven and lost seven straight to The Rock.

The Rock took a 21-14 lead into halftime, scoring touchdowns on three of their four possessions. Long threw a 35-yard TD pass to Mike Solomon to complete an 86-yard drive and a 42-yarder to Wilson to polish off a 63-yard march.

Clarion rushed for 150 yards in the first half, with quarterback Anthony Guercio scoring touchdowns on two short runs. The Golden Eagles had a potential scoring drive snuffed on the game's first possession as Josh Stokes recovered a fumble at the SRU 15.
