U.S. team celebrates World Cup triumph

LOS ANGELES — Carli Lloyd looked out over the cheering mob of U.S. women’s national team fans and raised an arm in triumph.

“It feels great to wake up as a world champion, and that feeling won’t ever get old,” Lloyd said.

The home celebrations got underway for the World Cup winners on Tuesday. The Americans were welcomed to downtown Los Angeles by an estimated crowd of 10,000 cheering fans at a rally in the first stop on a victory tour.

The first stateside appearance was a raucous party in front of fans who began camping out before dawn on short notice. Abby Wambach joyously lifted the World Cup trophy while the players led the crowd in chants of “I Believe That We Just Won!”

Warriors trade Lee to Boston Celtics

OAKLAND, Calif. — David Lee wanted to help turn around the Golden State Warriors when he came to the struggling franchise as a high-priced free agent in 2010.

Five years later, Lee is leaving with a championship — and the respect of his teammates and loyal fans.

The Warriors agreed to trade the former All-Star forward to the Boston Celtics for Gerald Wallace on Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the deal said.

Garnett returning for 21st NBA season

MINNEAPOLIS — Only two players in NBA history have made it to season No. 21 in their careers. Kevin Garnett is about to become the third.

Garnett agreed to terms on a two-year deal to return to the Minnesota Timberwolves, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced.

Pujols ready for Home Run Derby

DENVER — Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols says he will compete in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Pujols said he talked with Major League Baseball and confirmed he will be one of the hitters for the event Monday in Cincinnati. The All-Star Game is the next night.

Pujols entered Tuesday leading the American League with 25 home runs.

Brewers fan OK after foul ball strike

MILWAUKEE — A fan who was hospitalized after being hit by a foul ball during a major league game in Milwaukee is in satisfactory condition.

Froedtert Hospital spokeswoman Kathy Sieja said the woman has asked for her privacy.

The woman was hit Monday night at Miller Park by a foul line drive off the bat of Atlanta’s Eury Perez. The Braves were playing the Milwaukee Brewers.

The woman was sitting several rows behind the Milwaukee dugout on the first base side when she was struck in the ninth inning. The game was delayed for about nine minutes as medical personnel attended to her.

She was helped to her feet before medics placed her on a stretcher and carried her up a flight of stairs to the stadium’s first-level concourse. Her face appeared to be covered with a towel.
