Mars schools collecting candy for Pittsburgh nonprofit
As children around all neighborhoods filled up their bags with Halloween candy Thursday evening, Oct. 31, Mars schools have a solution for any leftovers.
The Mars area primary center, elementary, centennial and middle schools will be collecting candy through Thursday, Nov. 7. The collection will go toward Harvest Street Mission, a nonprofit charity that focuses on assisting and giving support to Pittsburgh’s homeless population.
In past years, the Mars schools have collected candy for different charitable organizations, such as Operation Gratitude, an organization that provided care packages to deployed troops and first responders, and the Lighthouse Foundation, a food bank in Butler County.
According to its website, Harvest Street Mission provides “meals for folks who live on the streets, in shelters or in low-income housing with a focus on the North Side of Pittsburgh.”
Leftover candy can be dropped off at the main offices of any of the schools, and it must be unopened in original wrappers.
