William Smith

Smith

William “Bill” Smith, 71, of Butler, entered into eternity with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024.

Bill was born on Oct. 22, 1953, in Pittsburgh. He was the son of the late Edward and June (Hickcox) Smith.

After graduating from Wilkinsburg High School, he went on to earn his bachelor’s in biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his Master of Science at Central Missouri University. Bill was employed by Armco/AK Steel and U.S. Steel as a safety engineer and a clinical instructor at Slippery Rock University in the safety management department. His passion was ensuring safety in the workplace and training the next generation of safety professionals.

Bill was a member of All Saints Parish of Meridian, where he served as a Eucharistic minister for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed serving others by volunteering with the local organizations, traveling to see the beauty of many National Parks, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers and spending time with his beloved family. Bill often said he lived vicariously through the adventures of his children. He is remembered for all his teaching moments in life.

Bill is survived by his wife, Donna (Matuszak) Smith; son, Dr. Joe Smith; daughter, Emily (Jordan) Miller; granddaughters, Cecilia and Claire Miller; brothers, Dean (Joy) Smith and David (Suzanne) Smith; numerous nieces and nephews; and his Australian shepherd, Casey.

The family would like to thank the Butler Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Team and staff of Three South for the excellent care he and his family received.
