Iraqi boy gets prosthetic eye
PITTSBURGH — An Iraqi boy wounded in a U.S. mortar attack at his home in Fallujah was fitted Thursday for a prosthetic eye.
Abdul Hakeem Khalaf, 7, underwent surgery last month to reconstruct his face. The boy's left eye was blinded and his eyelid, socket, jaw and cheek were damaged in April 2004 when the explosion destroyed his home.
On Thursday, he met with ocularist Walter T. Tillman III, who is painting a prosthetic eye for the boy.
No More Victims, a Los Angeles-based group, sponsored the boy. He and his father arrived in the United States in February and have been staying with a host family.
Abdul is expected to be in Pittsburgh for several months.
The hospital will absorb half of the cost of his stay, and three surgeons — Drs. Tonya Stefko, William Chung and Fred Deleyiannis — and Tillman have agreed to treat him for free. Massachusetts resident Ray Tye also contributed $50,000 toward the boy's care.
