Evans City approves possible legal action over police vehicles
EVANS CITY — Borough council on Monday, Nov. 4 unanimously approved entry into possible legal action if its final offer to purchase three Ford Interceptor vehicles from the former Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police Department isn’t accepted by Seven Fields.
While Evans City has been utilizing those vehicles for months, officials have attempted to purchase them outright to no avail for nearly a year after the department disbanded at the end of last year.
Officials said they made it clear to Seven Fields Borough Council that their best and final offer for the vehicles was $58,000. That amount was based on pricing averages on Municibid, an online auction service for government agencies, schools and authorities to sell their surplus and forfeitures directly to the public.
“We were hoping to have this police department completely dissolved in January or February, and now we’re in November and it’s still dragging on,” council member Patty Tumminello-Murphy said. “We’re supposed to split them (the assets), but they’re unwilling to actually settle on anything. It’s very frustrating.”
Evans City has been paying for maintenance-related costs for the vehicles, but the insurance is still being paid for by the now-defunct police department’s commission that existed as a combination of both borough’s leaders.
Borough solicitor Ryan Mergel would be responsible for handling any legal documents that would aim to resolve the situation in the coming weeks and months.
