College sports roundup: BC3 women’s volleyball earns 6 seed in NCJAA national tournament

Butler County Community College women’s volleyball earned the No. 6 seed in next week’s National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Championship.

The Pioneers (22-1) will face DuPage on Nov. 14 in the first round at Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The first-round match begins at 10 a.m. eastern time, with the winner advancing to an afternoon quarterfinal against the winner of No. 14 Monroe Bronx and No. 3 Finger Lakes.

The national championships continue the next two days with the semifinals and final.

The Pioneers were ranked much of the year and earned an at-large bid.

BC3 started the season 22-0 before losing its first game Saturday 3-0 against Sandhills Community College in the Mid-Atlantic district title game. Josie Russo had 10 kills and Molly Bissell eight in the loss, with Anora Robare dishing out 18 assists.

Football

Slippery Rock quarterback Brayden Long was named PSAC Co-Offensive Athlete of the Week along with IUP receiver Maurice Massey.

Long’s 399 yards are second-most in a game this season in the PSAC West, and he had four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 38-22 win at Clarion.

Teammate Mason Yohn was named the conference’s special teams player of the week after booting a 36-yard field goal and converting all five PATs in his first game at kicker this season.

Men’s basketball

Knoch grad Ryan Lang was named to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference preseason players to watch list Monday.

The 6-foot junior guard, who plays for Allegheny College, averaged 14.8 and 11.2 points in his first two seasons for the Gators.

Men’s wrestling

Seneca Valley grad Hunter Swedish was named the PAC Wrestler of the Week after going 4-1 for Washington & Jefferson during the King’s College Ned McGinley Invitational. The 141-pound senior finished second at the meet.

Another former Raider, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, took fourth place at the Clarion Open wrestling meet Sunday. Herrera-Rondon is a redshirt junior 157-pounder for the Golden Eagles. He won the first three matches of the tournament to reach the semifinals before losing to Ohio State’s TJ Schierl and Michigan’s Zack Mattin.
