SRU nips California on road
Kelvin Goodwin scored 19 points and the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team overcame a cascade of free throws by California (Pa.) University to win its third straight PSAC West contest, 64-62, over the Vulcans Saturday afternoon.
Cal was 30-of-39 from the free throw line in the game and scored 20 of its 41 second-half points from the stripe.
The Rock (15-5, 10-4) led 35-21 at the half, but the Vulcans tied the game at 57-57 late.
Frank Holloway added 18 points and Antonio Butler 13 for SRU, which was outrebounded by Cal. It was only the third time all season The Rock has been on the losing side of the rebounding battle.
Women’s BasketballD’Asia Chambers scored 21 points, but The Rock could not pull off an upset of No. 24 California (Pa.) University in a 74-63 loss.Cal led 32-18 in the first half, but SRU (7-11, 3-11) stormed back with a 15-3 run to trail by just three at the half.The Rock got as close as 41-40 before the Vulcans went on a 9-0 run and nursed their lead until the final buzzer.
